The Island - March 19 - 22, 2008

Caye
Caulker
Caye
Caulker was were I resided during "the Island" portion of my
trip. It is an island, residing in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of
Belize proper. It is one of several islands that caters to tourists.
Caye
Caulker isn't very big. I believe the main portion where all the tourists
go is about 1 mile long and about 1/4 mile wide. No cars exist on Caye
Caulker, you either walk, ride a bicycle, or drive a golf cart. The taxis
are golf carts. There are no paved streets - streets are packed sand.
I stayed at a place called the Lazy Iguana. They have a website if you'd
like to see pictures. It is a very nice place although a bit off the beaten
path (to use a cliche). It is fairly close the small airstrip but away
from the main tourist area.
I arrived
on Caye Caulker from Belize City via water taxi. The ride over took about
an hour and it was packed. I did not enjoy the water taxi all that much,
and i had occasion to travel that way a few more times. When I left the
Island for good for my departure from Belize back to Los Angeles, I actually
took a very small airplane from the small airstrip. I found this trip
much more enjoyable that the water taxi. The flight took about 15 minutes
and put me down at the airport, which is where I needed to be anyway.
Should I ever visit Caye Caulker again, this is the way I will travel.
While
on Caye Caulker, I took two "tours". The first full day, I went
snorkeling. And got a horrendous sunburn under cloudy skies. The second
day, when I went back to the mainland via the water taxi for the day,
I visited the Mayan ruins at Lamanai.
