Bodie, High Sierra Ghost Town

I have visited Bodie, California, 3 times in 4 years. In those visits, I have seen 99.9% of the town (since my last visit, in July of 2004, I have since discovered there are a couple of "shacks" that are behind some hills so I will definitely put them on my list to see next time). I have probably photographed each and every building in the town. I have put some of my numerous pictures here for your enjoyment. You lucky people! (Bonus points for anyone who can tell me from what play the previous line comes from.)

Bodie is a ghost town. It was inhabited from the mid-1800's until the end of World War II, after which it was pretty much abandoned and left to rot and decay. Until the early 1960's, when the state of California rescued it and designated it a state park. The state maintains the Park in a state of what it terms "arrested decay", which basically means they won't let it get any worse but they won't restore anything either.

Bodie, for a ghost town, has an amazing supply of buildings left standing. And at least one of the mills, which was the reason for Bodie's existence in the first place. I was finally able to tour the Standard Mill on my third visit in 2004; normally visitors to the Park are kept out of the Mill as it is "unsafe". The tour cost $5, the entrance fee $3. Not a bad price for a place I find endlessly fascinating.
