Hubbell Trading Post

Hubbell Trading Post - October 11, 2003

The Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site is located within the Navajo Nation in Northern Arizona. It is within the town of Granado, although most maps have it pictured on the outskirts. It is the oldest continuously operating trading post in the Navajo Nation and was established as a National Historic Site with the provision that the trading post store keep operating. I can vouch for that - the store is still open, and sells everything from Indian rugs and jewelry to Fruit Loops.

I spent about an hour at the Trading Post. It is not very big and I had missed the tour. (NOTE: A daily ranger-guided tour goes thru the main house, which is otherwise closed.) I did walk thru the actual Trading Post itself (where I saw the rugs, jewelry, and Fruit Loops), then thru the grounds. It was all pretty interesting - some old equipment is still scattered about and there is an actual Bread Oven structure, separate from the house. That was the most interesting part of the entire property, at least To Me.

The Trading Post was founded by one John Lorenzo Hubbell in about 1876. He was known for dealing honestly with the Navajo, which was, unfortunately, not the norm. He died in 1930, so he operated his Trading Post for a little over 50 years. During that time, he was a good friend to the neighboring Navajo. All of this (and much more data) can be found on the National Park Service literature provided by the Trading Post.
