North Rim, Grand Canyon National
Park - July 2, 2002
I thought I
would get a head start on today's entry. It is about 11:30 am as I write
this. I have just finished lunch - an orange, a breakfast bar, orange
juice, and some trail mix. Also have the ever present but much needed
and beloved water handy as well.
NOTE: All the literature
I read prior to the trip said to eat candy and nuts (hence the trail mix)
and drink plenty of water. I drank plenty of water on this trip.
I had just returned
from my morning hike prior to lunch. A nice 3+ mile jaunt from the campground
to the lodge and back. Not really difficult, but some parts were harder
than others due to the approximate 8200 foot elevation. (NOTE: I took
the Transept Trail between the lodge and the campground.) Lot of wind
up this high as well. Shortly, I will be off to the other part of the
North Rim.
(Later on that day)
I have just returned
from my trip over to what I will call "the other side of the park".
It's not really, the other side really being the South Rim, which is a
good 5 hour journey by car.
What I am referring
to is the Point Imperial and Cape Royal area. About 45 minutes by car
to Cape Royal. But there is some beautiful scenery. I also got to see
Angel's Window. And I attended the National Park Service (NPS) talk about
archeology and the Indians who once lived here. There are many thousands
of sites in this park, and it has not been completely surveyed.
NOTE: I also attended
that evening's ranger talk at the campground. The topic: Geology.
