Grand Canyon National Park

I have made 3 trips to the Grand Canyon - the initial trip in 2002, another in 2003, and the last in 2009. Twice I visited the North Rim (which I think I would really like more than the South Rim). My one trip to the South Rim (in 2003) was a quick over night trip which had some weather issues. In fact, all 3 trips had some sort of weather issues.

  • In 2002, there were a lot of wild fires throughout the West. Visitors to the Grand Canyon weren't allowed to hike on any of the trails. At the North Rim, where I camped for that trip, we were allowed only to walk on the trail from the campground over to the Lodge and back.
  • In April 15, 2003 (I remember this date well because it was tax day), I woke up to snow(!) covering my tent, my car, and the Park. Visibility was nill.
  • In 2009, I again woke up to snow mixed with rain.

I have yet to have a trip with good weather and visibility at the Grand Canyon. One can hope that someday this comes to pass.
