Caernarfon Castle

September 19, 1998

Caernarfon Castle (pronounced Ca-nar-ven) is located, interestingly enough, in the town of Caernarfon on the western coast of Wales. Imagine that! It was the largest of the castles I saw in Wales and, I think, the entire trip. It is very impressive and was meant to be so. King Henry (Longshanks) wanted to impress upon the troublesome Welsh that he and England were very mighty and powerful, and he built this particular castle to show the Welsh that they could never defeat him.

The castle is huge and heavily fortified. It was built sometime in the late 13th century (I don't have exact date handy). Since then it has been "kept up" so it is in really good condition. The Prince of Wales has his investiture ceremony here (after all, the castle is located in WALES).

Below is a slideshow. To start the show, you need to press the START button. The pictures will automatically advance; you can advance them quicker than the timer by pressing the navigation buttons. You can reverse if you would like as well.
