Virginia City - May 16, 2001

I will admit, Virginia City disappointed me. Very commercial. All they seem to do there is sell souvenirs. Or tours. Or something. Without the commercialism I believe it would be a nice, quaint little town.

But I did visit. I did pay for one of the tours. It was a 20-minute or so bus tour with narration. Cost about $3, if I remember correctly. And I walked up and down what is, for all intents and purposes, the main street. There isn't much to Virginia City. I also spent quite a bit of time in the cemeteries - Virginia City has quite a few of them. (No, I am not a necrophiliac. There is a lot of history in cemeteries!) Actually, Virginia City has about 15 cemeteries. Each group and/or church in the town has its own. As does the most famous "lady of the evening" - none of the other women in the town wanted her buried in "their" cemetery. So she has her own, over on a hill by one of the mines, far away from the rest of the cemeteries. The rest of the cemeteries are grouped together and separated by fencing.

I didn't take very many pictures of Virginia City. As I said, I was disappointed. Following are the best of what I did take. Several are of the cemeteries and one is of the town from a cemetery.
