Montana - 1994

Montana is a beautiful place. Very nice and hot in the summer; probably pretty cold and bleak in the winter. I stayed in two cities/towns while I was here - Billings and West Yellowstone, which I discuss a bit more when I discuss Wyoming. Billings was a small city. It had, by far, the nicest hotel I stayed at on my trip, The Billings Inn. I remember it because it had cherrywood furniture and cost less than any other hotel on the trip.

The only activity I participated in while in Billings was to attend the rodeo. Not a very good rodeo. I actually left early during some sort of team calf-roping event. The same people kept competing with different partners. According to the announcer changing partners is very common.

Little Big Horn
Little Big Horn, Montana (the place where Custer was found is notated by the black marker)

On the way to Billings from Wyoming I-90 goes through the Crow Reservation. You cannot exit the interstate during this portion. Except at one point, the Custer Battlefield National Monument which, you guessed it, is at the site of the Battle of Little Bighorn. The Monument has a ranger center next to the site of Custer's Last Stand, which is dotted with tombstones representing where the men fell during the battle. Custer's tombstone is black with lettering to distinguish from the others. Tombstones also dot the nearby hills, to which one can drive and walk around on the paved paths. I remember it was very hot that day.
