Wyoming - 1994

Devils Tower
Devil's Tower National Monument, Wyoming

Above is my best picture of Devil's Tower, my first objective to see on my way to Yellowstone from South Dakota. Devil's Tower is a bit out of the way - I had to exit I-90 and get there and back using two different state highways. I think the entire trip took about an hour. Devil's Tower is recognizable as the destination of all those people in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It's where the alien spaceship lands. In real life, it is the site of many types of outdoor activities. You must sign in at the local ranger station before going anywhere near it. I took several pictures but I liked this one the best. The picture and Devil's Tower itself do look a lot better in person.

A few hours later a little further down I-90, before I reached the Montana border, I visited Fort Phil Kearney (pronounced Carney). Fort Phil Kearney no longer exists today but a historical site does, so the actual fort might as well still be with us. Once upon a time, Fort Phil Kearney was a frontier fort in the Old West, used to protect settlers against attacks by the Native Americans. All that remains now is some archeological remnants.

About 1-2 hours later, I exited Wyoming (for now) on my way to Montana.

Bear Tooth Pass, Shoshone National ForestAnd the next day, around noon, I was back in Wyoming courtesy of the Shoshone National Forest. The Shoshone National Forest is way up there in the mountains of northwestern Wyoming. So far up there that there was still snow at the beginning of July. I think the temperature was about 40° fahrenheit. I actually liked it alot. It was and probably still is very pretty up. Lots of trees (that's why it's called a National Forest) and a lot of ponds and lakes as well. Very soon after I exited Shoshone National Forest I arrived at the east gate to Yellowstone.

I am going to cover Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, Cody, and Fort Laramie on different pages - just too much to say and too many pictures. For now, I will skip to South Pass City.

I spent the next two days in Wyoming traveling southeast, visiting South Pass City (another collection of various old buildings but different in that these buildings were actually built on this spot, a pass through the Continental Divide), Independence Rock (settlers on their way west wrote their names on this large behemoth of a rock located in the middle of the state off of a state highway), and Fort Laramie National Historical Site. Pictures of South Pass City, Independence Rock, and Devils Gate are below.
