Tunnel View

Tunnel View is more or less as the name implies - the view from a tunnel. In this instance, however, it is the view of Yosemite Valley as one exits the Wawona Tunnel coming north on CA-41. Immediately as one exits the tunnel, there are 2 parking areas on either side of the road.

In 2008, the National Park Service was improving the parking areas so only the one on the south side of the road was open. That worked for me, however, and I dutifully parked my car, exited, and crossed the (somewhat) busy highway to get pictures of the valley. Apparently, this is one of the place to take pictures of the Valley and one of the pictures in the montage at the top of this page is from that viewpoint. Here is a much larger image:

I visited the Park again in 2010 and stopped at the parking area on the east side of the tunnel. All of the construction was done, so no issues there. The picture below was taken the day after it had rained/snowed all day; the Valley got more rain than snow about 1 foot of snow fell at the higher altitudes. One of the nice benefits of rain is that it makes the sky really clear for a few days after. Half Dome is clearly visible in the back of both pictures and in the shadow on the lower right-hand corner of the picture, you can barely see Bridal Veil Falls.
